The Inaugural Symposium !

INDIANA UNIVERSITY/PURDUE UNIVERSITY
PRESS RELEASE
Fall 1998

Chancellor Gerald Bepko of Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis has announced that on December 1, 1998, IUPUI will host the first annual Bulen Symposium on American Politics.

Presenters already confirmed include such luminaries as David Broder, Mark Shields, Ken Bode and a number of other nationally known commentators; Jim Nicholson, Chair of the National Republican Committee and Colorado Governor Roy Roemer, Chair of the Natinal Democratic National Committee; and Joe Andrew and Mike McDaniel, chairs, respectively, of the Indiana Democrats and Republicans. They will be joined by a number of respected scholars, political figures and media representatives to discuss the declining influence of political parties and the significance of that decline to the health of our political and governmental institutions.

"We are delighted to be able to present an event of such national importance." Said Bepko. "We are especially indebted to the committee that has chosen to honor Keith Bulen's contributions to American political life by establishing an annual symposium devoted to the subject Keith cared most about-the health of the American political system."

The Committee boasts some of the most important political names in the state, both Republican and Democrat. Co-chairing the event will be Mitchell Daniels, Jr., a senior executive at Eli Lilly Company, William Blomquist, Chair of the I.U. Department of Political Science at IUPUI, and Sheila Kennedy, Assistant Professor of Law and Public Policy at the I.U. School of Public and Environmental Affairs at IUPUI.

The Symposium will be an all-day event held at the University Place Conference Center, 850 W. Michigan Street on the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis campus. Attendance will be by invitation only, and strictly limited. There will also be a luncheon presentation, and a dinner honoring Keith Bulen. Those unable to participate in the full-day symposium will have an opportunity to attend either or both of those events.

"Keith has been a real inspiration to generations of Indiana political figures," said Daniels. "We hope the Bulen Symposium will become the premiere forum for discussion of the American political landscape and, even more important, will become a vehicle for the revitalization and reinvigoration of our political institutions."
